What is Acne?
With all this talk about acne, we might as well try to condition a bit. Acne is the name commonly used for the pores clogged by sebum (also known as whiteheads and Blackheads), pimples, nodules or cysts that can be displayed on the face, neck, shoulders, chest, back, upper arms and upper legs.
Most teenagers and a good number of adults suffer from acne for more or less extended period of time. The condition is not limited to any age group, race or sex. It affects hundreds of millions of people around the world. The biggest problems with acne are the unpleasant look of pimples and can leave scars.
Types AcneAlthough spots are by far the most common form of acne and the one most people will probably face or suffering from, you should know that there are other forms too. The simplest form is acne vulgaris, which features only comedones, the simplest of lesions.
Laesies are small patches of skin affected by acne, although the term "lesion" is not limited to the changes made by acne on the skin tissues. Acne lesions are the outward form of comedones, the sebaceous follicles affiliated with more than sebum.
Comedonen are known as blackheads and whiteheads, depending on whether the pores open or not. Blackheads are pores whose distended openings are blocked by a mixture of keratin and sebum, which is black at the surface. Whitehead closed pores are filled with the secretion of the sebaceous gland which swells under the tissues.
Comendones are the usual target for picking and squeezing. However, opening a follicle in less than a sterile environment of your house can lead to a slight infection. An open pore is an entry point for all types of bacteria.
Papules - The papule is a small, fixed usually aware of the inflammatory skin that no pus. Very small papules may also appear in clusters, due to the fabric's response to acne.
Pustels develop - pustules are small increases in inflamed skin that are filled with pus. The etter is a combination of bacteria, white blood cells and dead skin cells. Pustels develop are usually formed around sebaceous follicles and hair.
Maculae - A macula is a red stain on the skin left by an acne lesion. Maculae are flat, red and stand out against the surrounding skin. A group of maculae gives the face an inflamed aspect.
Balletjes - The nodule is a solid lesion, one of the most painful wounds caused by acne. Balletjes tend to be extended to the deeper layers of the skin and it is known that lead to destruction of tissue. They can be very painful to remove and leave scars behind. Lumpy acne is a serious form of acne that is dealt with only isotretinonin.
Cyst - cysts are the lesions form of capsules and contain liquid or semi-liquid pus similar to that found in pustules. However, cysts are larger than pustules and may be infected. Cysts are also extending deeper into the skin and leave behind scar tissue. Nodulocystic acne is probably the worst form of acne known to man. It is resistant to treatment and responds only to isotretinoin, the substance that is derived from vitamin A.
